WISDOM TEETH EXTRACTION

Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth — the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom.
If a wisdom tooth does not have room to grow it is an impacted wisdom tooth, which can cause pain, infection, crowding or other dental problems. Extraction is generally recommended.

Most complex surgical procedures, as well as hygiene scaling can be performed with I.V. Sedation.
Intravenous Conscious Sedation (IV sedation) is when a calming, relaxing drug is given into a vein during dental treatment.
It is administered by a registered dental nurse.

During IV Sedation, you will feel deeply relaxed and your anxiety will be greatly reduced. You will be less aware of what is happening, and you may feel sleepy.
You will however be able to understand and respond to requests from your dentist, and you can let them know how you feel. The next day, you may not remember much about the procedure.

if diabetic, no fasting required
no driving 24 hours afterwards

must be supervised by an adult post dismissal from clinic, including over-night supervision

According to the American Society of Anaesthesiology Classification of Physical Status (ASA) the following category of patients can be treated in a general practice:

ASA I – Normal, healthy patient
ASA II – A Patient with mild systemic disease, well controlled with medication (includes hypertension, diabetes, etc.)

Local anesthetic is still required. The drug which is usually used for IV sedation are anti-anxiety drugs, not painkillers.
While they relax you and make you forget what happens, you will still be numbed with local anesthetic.

Many surgical procedures, as well as hygiene scaling can be performed with Nitrous Oxide, also known as "Laughing Gas".
It is a mild sedative
It promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety.

When inhaled, the gas slows down the body’s reaction time.
This results in a calm, euphoric feeling.

Patients can drive afterwards.
With inhalation of oxygen, the nitrous oxide leaves the system.
The patient is able to drive after approximately 15 minutes.
